2.5MW/5MWh Grid-side in Finland
Project Overview
BESS for FCR in Finland deploys a 2.5MW/5MWh grid-side battery energy storage system with intelligent EMS to deliver peak shaving and fast frequency response for Fingrid reserve services (FCR and FFR).
In response to Finland’s accelerating renewable integration and rising need for fast frequency support, FFD POWER deployed a 2.5MW/5MWh grid-side BESS to deliver peak shaving and frequency regulation services. This project demonstrates how a grid-side BESS can meet Fingrid’s fast-response frequency requirements while also performing peak shaving—unlocking multi-service revenue and improving system stability without relying on fossil-fuel peakers.
Project Background
Finland’s power system is progressing rapidly toward a higher share of variable renewable generation, which increases the need for fast, accurate balancing resources. Grid-side BESS provides high-speed active power response and can participate in Fingrid’s reserve market, including FCR-D and FCR-N, while also capturing value from time-of-use energy arbitrage.
Project Challenge
- Multi-service Requirements: The asset must deliver reliable frequency response while maintaining sufficient headroom for energy shifting and peak management.
- Fast Response and Accuracy: Participation in grid reserve markets requires rapid dispatch, precise control, and dependable telemetry under dynamic grid conditions.
- Economic Optimization: Revenues depend on coordinating reserve commitments with market price spreads, without overstressing the battery through unnecessary cycling.
FFD POWER Solution
FFD POWER delivered a grid-side BESS solution with an EMS capatible of multi-market co-optimization. The control system continuously evaluates reserve signals, price forecasts, state-of-charge (SoC) limits, and operating constraints to schedule charging and discharging, enabling simultaneous frequency support and peak shaving while maximizing overall project economics.
System Specifications

Operational Logic: Multi-Market Co-Optimization
The EMS coordinates reserve services and energy shifting through a closed-loop optimization strategy:
- Frequency Regulation: Provides FCR-N and FCR-D response for continuous balancing and disturbance events; supports FFR for ultra-fast response during critical frequency deviations.
- Peak Shaving and Arbitrage: Charges during low-price periods and discharges during peak-price windows to capture the energy price spread and reduce system peaks.
- Reserve Capacity Management: Maintains committed headroom and SoC margins to ensure compliance with reserve obligations while preserving operational resilience.
- Data-driven Scheduling: Uses price and system-condition inputs to refine dispatch plans, minimizing unnecessary cycling and reducing thermal/SOC stress.
