Seamless Backup for Life-Safety Loads — in Italy
Project Overview
BESS for Seamless Backup Power in Italy demonstrates how a 210kW/466kWh cabinet-based battery energy storage system can provide zero-interruption (seamless) backup for critical care-home loads. Compared with conventional generator-only solutions, the BESS can respond instantly to upstream voltage events and outages, maintaining stable supply while other backup sources start or while the site transfers between sources. The EMS maintains a strict reserve policy, validates readiness continuously, and coordinates event response and post-event recovery to ensure the facility remains protected day and night.
Project Background
Elderly care facilities depend on continuous power for essential services, including emergency lighting, elevators (controlled operation), access control, IT/communications, refrigeration for medication, and medical support equipment. Even short interruptions can cause safety risks and operational disruption. In many sites, diesel generators can cover longer outages but cannot always prevent brief dropouts during transfer or start-up. A seamless BESS solution fills this gap by providing instantaneous ride-through and controlled backup discharge, improving resilience without compromising daily operations.
Project Challenge
- Zero-Interruption Requirement: Deliver immediate ride-through during outages and voltage dips, ensuring no loss of supply to critical loads.
- Guaranteed Reserve Readiness: Hold sufficient SOC and power headroom at all times to meet the backup duty cycle and power level.
- Controlled Recovery and Reporting: Recharge after events without creating new demand peaks and keep event logs/alarms for facility operations and compliance.
FFD POWER Solution
FFD POWER deployed two cabinet BESS units delivering 210kW/466kWh, configured for seamless backup in an elderly care environment. The EMS continuously monitors grid status, load level, and BESS health, maintaining a reserve SOC band dedicated to emergency response. On detection of abnormal grid conditions, the system transitions instantly to backup discharge, stabilizing the supply to critical loads. After the event, controlled recharge restores reserve capacity while keeping site demand within predefined limits.
System Specifications
- BESS POWER : 210 KW
- BESS capacity : 466 KWH
- Product used : Galaxy 233L Cabinet-type all-in-one BESS (dual-cabinet installation)
- Application : Seamless backup power (critical facility)
- Architecture: EMS with reserve SOC + fast ride-through support + controlled recharge & logging
Operational Logic: Ride-Through + Reserve SOC + Recovery
The EMS logic is designed to guarantee uninterrupted backup capability while protecting battery health:
- Reserve SOC Enforcement: maintains a minimum SOC threshold (and power headroom) reserved for emergencies; restricts non-essential discharge.
- Instant Disturbance Response: detects outage/abnormal voltage conditions and immediately commands backup discharge to hold stable supply to critical loads.
- Post-Event Recovery: restores SOC through controlled, power-limited charging to avoid new peaks, with alarms and time-stamped event logging for reporting.
